This morning we visited the market at San Lorenzo and then walked to Mercado Nuevo. We bargained for pashimas, got Gary a hat, rubbed the snout of Porcellino and fed him a coin to ensure our return to Florence -- then walked down to the Arno , past the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio and then to Santa Maria Novella.
Since we didn't have much of a breakfast we were ready for an late lunch/early dinner at 2pm so we found a Rick Steves recommendation, Trattoria Za Za. While it poured buckets, we were dry and happy under their tent, knocking back Chianti Classico, bruschetta, Ribollita, pasta -- and Gary had beefsteak
The rain never really let up and by the time we walked back to the hotel, there were rumbling thunderstorms passing over us.
We were located in a great neighborhood so was easy to find a laundramat and internet spot and take care of housekeeping. While doing the laundry, we had a nice chat with a young man from India. He came over here to work...but seemed very homesick and it was evident that he missed his mother greatly. He's trying to earn back the money he spent to get over here (plus a little more) and can't wait to go back to India. We wish him good luck...it must be very hard to be so far from the ones you love.
Anyway, we're keeping our fingers crossed that the rain will go away overnight 'cause tomorrow we start hiking in Volterra.
