Up bright and early...and after breakfast at the hotel, we jumped in the car to check out Bismarck. It's a remarkably clean, green, peaceful...and flat! People are friendly and kind...but today the weather was kind of cool and cloudy.

Right off the bat we found two Starbucks...so after a quick stop for a latte and a bit of shopping at Target, we stopped at the grocery store to pick up our contribution for the pot luck.

At the check out line, we were behind a cheery lady with oodles of hot dogs, hot dog buns and hamburger buns. I had a sneaking feeling that, although I hadn't seen her in years, she was my cousin Sandy...so Jim asked her if she was going to a family reunion. When she (warily)answered "yes" we happily introduced ourselves...and followed her and her husband, Dennis to the Sertoma park.

We got the tables and chairs set up...and before too long, the room was bursting to the seams with 60 children, grand children and great grandchildren of Gotthilf and Caroline Herr. It was so much fun reconnecting with relatives I hadn't seen in years and years...and it was a pleasure introducing them all to Gary. And, of course, watching Mom laugh, joke and talk with her brothers and sisters made me the happiest girl in the world.

The only thing that could have made it better was if my brother Ken had been able to go. Everyone asked about him...and we brought pictures of him along to show around. (I just know he would have LOVED the pot luck and really would have done it justice!)

Since we've already decided to make this a regular occurance, the next one will take place on Labor Day, 2008...so I'm sure Ken will have time to save up for that one.
