We pulled up at the Grand Turk pier at 7am, just as promised.  Did you know that Grand Turk Island is named after a type of cactus with a red fez-like top that inhabits the island? Thus the name.

It was windy but sunny and after a quick breakfast, we headed down to the gang plank and went ashore around 8am to check in for our "Bike, Hike and Swim" tour.

We found a bunch of big, old-fashioned Schwin-type bikes with coaster brakes and big baskets in the front...and had a great time pedaling about the island with Jack, our guide.  At one beach, Jack scooped up welks and other critters from the tidepools -- but it was too windy and the waves were too big for us to swim or snorkel.  In fact Jack said that he had never seen the sea so choppy on that side of the island.

We continued cycling into town.  Quaint old buildings lined the street and we had a few minutes to leave our bikes behind and walk about the town.  We rode past the old salt pans, saw some wilde donkeys and rode past a life-sized model of the old space capsule that landed in the ocean nearby in the 60's.

We rode over to Governor's beach and sunbathed for a bit -- then back to the pier.  We stopped in at Margaritaville but it was much too crowded to even get a drink...so we headed back to the ship and had lunch...and soon we were chugging out of Grand Turk.

The wind was really bad by the time we left...and it was too cold to walk the decks anymore.  I played the slots int he Casino until dinner...and we met up with Hunter Karen and Ali and shared stories of our shore leave with each other.  Then, after a horrible after dinner show (a tenor who tried to combine Elvis and Pavarotti), we went back to our room for another good night's sleep.
