The last few weeks have flown past! Currently we are living with another couple of employees from the hospital - a physio and nurse - so all working our well. The only glitch has been the nasty swooping magpie that I have to face everyday walking to and from work. Apart from that we have been working hard at Mackay Base Hospital and Hasting Deering, so Nick and I have used the last few weekends to get out and about in and around Mackay.
A couple of weekends ago we spent the day in Eungella National Park, which is in the Pioneer Valley about 80kms west of Mackay. Firstly we set off on a couple of kilometer walk through the rainforest to Finch Hatton Gorge. Along the way we saw a 1.5m long goanna - who was not fazed by us at all and continued waddling across the path. By the time we made it to the waterfall we were ready for a swim! And were refreshed by the fresh river under the waterfall. After a picnic lunch we walked around the Sky Window Circuit and took in the magnificent view of the cane fields in the Pioneer valley back towards the coast. A bit further along we went platypus spotting in the Broken River. Despite it being mid afternoon and the recommended times for sighting being around dawn and dusk we were lucky enough to see one bobbing up and down feeding. In the river there were also turtles of all sizes - mini babies to adults.
On the 20th of Oct we dolled ourselves up and went the Mackay races. Which was a big day in Mackay despite the fact all the horses have been struck down with the flu and there was no actual races. It was still a great day with Fashions in the field contest and some betting on the Caulfield cup and Ascot.
This weekend we went up to Airlie beach with one of our house mates Kirstie. On Saturday we wet Ocean Rafting around the Whitsunday Islands. The weather was beautiful and the scenery spectacular as our raft scooted us around the islands. In the morning we wet to the Hill inlet and lookout at Tongue Bay where we got a spectacular view of Whitehaven Beach. After relaxing on the pristine beach and a buffet lunch it was off for an afternoon snorkeling. The boat stopped at two places - Mantaray Bay and Maureens Cove. Both had lots of fish and coral but I liked Mantaray Bay best because there seemed to be a wider range of fish of all sizes and colours. Luckily being only the end of October stinger season has not quite started so we were able to enjoy the beach. On the way home despite being in a raft a couple of people managed to have a nap until our driver decided play in a fishing boats wake so everyone was soaked buy the time we returned. After such a great day on the water we had a couple of drinks at Magnums and spend Sunday relaxing by the lagoon.
Well now back into another week of work and planning our next adventure. Hope you enjoy the photos
Love Kathryn & Nick
