After a successful Sunday sightseeing, we headed back to Dublin.
Then watched Braveheart(!)
on Monday, I was working, so Clare headed off to do a walking tour in Dublin before her evening flight. Unfortunately, news that day from the UK wasn't great, and flights were being disrupted in London due to the snow - they even closed Heathrow!
As Clare was flying to Newcastle in the north-east, her flight still looked OK and she headed to the airport as normal. They eventually cancelled it when she got to the departure lounge! It was just one of these unavoidable weather related things, and most flights to the UK were cancelled by that point. She was flying with Ryanair, and they gave her a note to say she could re-book on-line, or queue and re-book at the airport desks.
As you can imagine, the computers were full, and the queue at the desk was horrendous - it was already about 9pm, so she called me and I just told her to make her way back to my flat, and that I'd try and sort it out on-line here.
Turns out the website wasn't really set up to deal with that, as she had already started out on her journey (i.e. she was returning) and 'technically' the return flight had already 'left' as well. It was impossible to rebook basically. I let her know, and she asked me to just book her on the early morning flight, so I did, in the hope that Ryanair would honour that.
We weren't really hopeful of the refund happening, given Ryanair is a budget airline (and that they are currently debating whether to charge people for 'using the loo' mid-air, by having a coinslot for toilet entry!). Nevertheless, hat off to them, I have heard from Clare on this fine evening (8th March 2009) that they are going to refund the flight she had to purchase! She has yet to see the money in her account, but I feel this is definitely good progress! Hurrah!

Ryanair...
Initially I swore never to fly with Ryanair again, but I'm starting to rethink that since they promised a refund...hurrah! Thanks to Kathryn, I had somewhere warm to stay that night - saw several people kipping in the airport :-(
Re: Ryanair...
Oh Clare! What kind of friend would I have been if I had let you kip in the airport! Glad that you might get a refund!
