Ladies! feeling downhearted at the loss of the first, or maybe second bloom of youth? Just come to Botswana and you might find you are the most desirable thing in the world. This world, that is.
Whereas in South Africa it was mostly potbellied middle-aged white men who thought I would leap at the chance of being the object of their loutish affections, in Botswana there is an endless supply of, sometimes quite attractive, eager young black men falling over themselves to get there first. Within minutes, or even sooner, they proclaim their undying love, you are gorgeous, they can't live without you, not even take their eyes off of you, not for a second.
Ah, how romantic. 'I love your booody.' Yes quite, now kindly remove your hands from it and go find yourself a nice local girl.'
'Nooo,' head buried in hands for dramatic effect, 'Botswana girls are trouble, you give them everything then they go to another man.'
Oh dear, let me find a tissue. His face lightens up: 'But you are a gooood woman, you are faithful. I m sure.'
'Exactly, so what's your point?' Puzzled look. New try. 'You don't like black men? You want the white one over there, looking at you?'
'I don't want anyone, unless he is peacock blue, that might be interesting. Now go away, I will not give you anything either, no drinks, no money, no cigarettes.' (So there!)
I'm getting good at this, took me a while but feels much better. He's weighing up his chances now, and pretending to get over my snub he happily says: 'OK, lets the two of us go sleep then.'

Ah, maybe I need a little more practise. 'Listen, I am not interested, got that? Now leave me alone.'
He is utterly surprised, and hurt, didn't he just tell me he loved me? He will dream of me tonight, etc etc.'

You have got to laugh but it's worrying too. You don't want to be impolite when someone says 'Hello, how are you?' but it doesn't stop at a simple "Fine,' and somehow they see me coming.
Age is another thing, they guess, always very much younger, 37, 39? Keep going, I just told you I have a 31 year old daughter. Flattery or can they really not tell a white woman's age? Whatever, who buys this nonsense anyway?
Now I recall Louis shouting at me: 'For gods sake woman, you are fifty, act your age!.
That I took as a compliment:)

Just nattering on, in my dorm, escaping the heat. Its actually quite wonderful here, a big room, big fan, just 8 beds and I am the only one presently. Marvelous view of the river, I sleep right next to a large window and wake-up to beautiful sunrises and birds singing. Doesn't get much better than this.
Later in the day I will try and arrange to spend some days in the Okavango delta. To do a catered trip there needs to be at least two and it is very quiet now. So maybe I will try self catering then I can go with just a poler, but I don't really fancy the hassle of sorting out the food.
We'll see. Yesterday I went into town to get walking shoes, hmm, a sunhat, mosquito repellent, things I'll need in the swamp. I also got some shorts, can't remember when I last wore those, but my legs are white and my feet are brown and its like I am wearing little socks now. Anyway, the shorts are floppy and wide with elastic in the waist, like a mini-skirt, so I look pretty daft and hope that won't offend the poler. Actually, may be best if he's an impotent old white guy, I don't want to be stuck on some remote island with a gorgeous, virile exotic young man.
 Or do I?
Just kidding, just kidding - peace and quiet, I want to relax and enjoy the scenery, the sounds and smells, maybe the odd crocodile - I've had enough of the predators of the human kind:)

PS Just remembered I meant to also mention all the kind, charming, generous and hospitable South Africans, of all shapes and ages, I was lucky enough to meet.
  Sorry guys, I didn't mean you :)
