Mdumbi - don't know what I am doing here but it feels all right.
Things didn't go as planned. A long story - maybe another time. Besides internet is tricky so I must keep it short and sweet. My project didn't exist and I was left stranded. Been trying to sort things out for the past 12 days, landed in Mdumbi, not far from Coffee Bay, where there seemed to be possibilities .However, I just found out chances are slim. Not that the community can't do with some help, it's getting it organized.
I think it's an African thing, all about time.

Mdumbi is first of all an incredibly beautiful coastal village, really - you look around and can't believe such a place actually exists. Not many houses, all clay huts, spread amongst the hills, a tiny shop boasting a very limited and odd selection, a shebeen, that's a local pub, with a non-functioning restaurant. A little school .Women still fetch water, carry enormous stacks of branches on their heads .Electricity and running water are a rare commodity. The backpacker's lodge has it, when it works.
There were no backpackers when I was there, though I was told the odd one found his way there. A jumble of mostly white South Africans seem to have settled down there, more or less permanently. Life seems to just drift on for them without much sense of urgency, purpose or direction.
It is quite surprising, and touching, how readily you are regarded as one of them, as if they already knew you and will look after you.

I have now moved to different accommodation, even more primitive, not sure how long I'll be staying here. See how I like it, no proper toilet, no shower, no water basically.
Tomorrow 2 volunteers, a couple from New Zealand will return to Mdumbi, I hope they can help me further, if not, I'll move on when I'm ready. If I can, it's a bit like 'Hotel California,' not easy to get out. You can hang around for days hoping to catch a ride, a bumpy one too. Few cars, no-one has petrol, not much desire to go anywhere anyway.
Money is a big issue, it is talked about all the time, notes and coins changing hands, deals being struck as if major transactions are going on when in reality the amounts are not worth mentioning.
That is not just typical for Mdumbi

Well, that's it for the moment. Oh, health could be better - same as last year, so I reckon I'll survive.
No pics because of the internet situation, I really hope I can manage some later.....
