JOURNEY: Alligator Creek to Bowen 200kms approx.

WEATHER: Warm- high twenties; sunny

We had a quiet relaxing stay at the national park- sounds funny for people like us to say that but it is good to stop and smell the trees!!!!!

The drive to Bowen was through sugar cane country and we saw many mango trees along the way. This area grows winter vegetables and cattle stations produce great beef! Bowen is home to the fabulous Bowen mango but they are not in season now but vine grown tomatoes are growing roadside on big plantations. Couldn't locate a seller of local tomatoes.

We passed through the town of Ayr on our way and we found an Italian Deli. there, selling yummy goodies and a special butcher with the best sausages.

We checked out the free rest stop at Home Hill and thought it looked great for an overnight stop; too early for us to retire for the day.

On arrival in Bowen we found a spot by the water in the shade for coffee and food. The waterfront has been upgraded and looks good.

The information centre advised there were no free stops here so we booked into the Wangarrata Tourist Park on the beach and enjoyed long walks on the beach and Kath got up early to snap some sunrises- a bit disappointing.

It was coral spawning time and the smell was  overpowering at times and the spores were washed up to shore and didn't look pretty- we thought it was pollution until someone informed us otherwise.

Bowen is a very pretty and relaxed town with some absolutely gorgeous beaches; enjoyed the Cape Edgecumbe Walking Trail from Horseshoe Bay with beautiful views of the sea. We spent a day checking out the beaches along the coast.

Fish and chips for dinner under the stars was a special and the mackeral was delicious.

This is a lovely destination!
