JOURNEY: Barcelona, Athens, Santorini - 2000+kms by air

WEATHER: Fine, sunny, mid 20's

Up bright and early on this Monday, St Jordi's day, the most romantic day of the Barcelonian calender; a bit like St Valentine's Day in Australia but here men give their partners a red rose and women give their mates a book. So Plaza Catalunya where we are catching the bus to the airport is buzzing with activity and stalls selling roses and books.

The bus to the airport costs 5.80 euros each and gets us there in 20 minutes.

The 21/2 hour flight to Athens is comfortable and Kath asks the flight attendant about the time difference, 0  is the answer and we almost miss the flight to Santorini when we saunter into the Athens airport security area with what we thought was an hour early, when Sheila noticed a clock that showed 18.30 our flight departure time; Kath checked with a Greek woman in the queue who confirmed the time and told us to rush to the top of the queue and explain that our flight was about to leave.

Talk about rapid heart beat and high stress, we made it through security, dashed to the gate, and the plane was running 30 minutes late!!! Close call!

The flight to Santorini from Athens is just over 30 minutes and we were soon on the island and in the Merovigliossa Apartments vehicle on our way to our accommodation. We were very happy with the apartment- room, view and services and Costas the manager served us welcome drinks and gave us maps and recommendations.

Santorini is a well known Greek Island, often voted most romantic, or best island in the world; we were not sure what to expect but found that the island lived up to its reputation

It's crescent shape was formed by volcanic eruption and the main city of Fira sits 200 metres above the Aegean sea. The island has a population od 15,000 people and its main industry is tourism but there is a significant wine industry- the grapes are grown on strangely woven vines that look like a basket, to protect the grapes and leaves from the severe winds that carry sand. There is also agriculture that produces Santorini tomatoes, white augergine and some small chick peas, although these industries seem to be declining as younger generations find the labour needed to produce these crops is very hard.

Most of the island is far above the sea but there are some beaches Black, Red, and Grey that have been developed in the last 20 years for tourists.

At Imerovigli we are 250 metres above the sea and have sunset and caldera views for $80 per night.
By the time we are settled into our accommodation it is 9pm so we walk to the nearby Estia Restaurant 5 minutes away and enjoy oven cooked lamb & potatoes, fried white aubergine rolls and stuffed peppers with cold beers.
Imerovigli has a couple of supermarkets and 3 restaurants and that makes our location convenient as well as peaceful and beautiful. Sunset and sunrise from here is spectacular.

Very romantic, the Mediterranean see has always been.
I would like to know how big is the island, if you can walk from one side to the other.
Enjoy the landscape, see, sunset, rocks, there is a lot to do wthout rush.
I think you have chosen one of most beatifull places in Europe, and the weather seems to be good.
Congratulations!
