JOURNEY; San Sebastian, Hondarribia, Biarritz (France) = 120 kms round trip

WEATHER: Wet, cold, windy. Later, cool and sunny!

Thursday, with the weather forecast still gloomy we drove to the gorgeous little border town of Hondarribia and braved the cold wet morning to make our way to a very good coffee shop in the main plaza where we ate real French croissants and sipped very good coffees.

After visiting the information centre we decided to drive into France, about 50kms up the coast to the holiday town of Biarritz; no point in wandering around Hondarribia in the pouring rain. As you can imagine the coastal towns were not at their best but we stopped at a French bakery to get some good bread and pastries to add to our picnic lunch that we ate in the car at the Biarritz beach.

As we turned around to go back to Spain the clouds lifted, the rain stopped and by the time we got back to Hondarribia we had a sunny afternoon-wow, what good luck!

The old city is very attractive and is contained within the old stone walls; we noticed a lot of tourists- French, Spanish and international.

The area around the port faces France and the streets are lined with colourful house that belong/ed to fishermen; many are now restaurants and bars. The most typical street is San Pedro and we admired the structures and flower boxes with bright red flowers- a bit like Switzerland with its window boxes.

Another happy day exploring new territory and then back to our head quarters at San Sebastian.
