Journey: Lisbon, Portugal to Serville, Spain- 420 kms approx.
Weather: 10 degrees to 20 degrees; sunny
Packed, fed and ready to leave the apartment at Rua Ausgusta, Lisbon. As usual we are early to allow for misadventures and miscalculations. And we had one as we turned into the street- walked straight past the turn to the underground Metro and doubled back to find it was the first left after the apartment.
Lugging the suitcases up or down steep stairs is a challenge that Sheila overcame immediately; Kath is happy to report that she has now found the skill and tackles the stairwells with confidence. The apartment had just 55 steps and journey to the bus station had a few elevators to ease the strain. By the way the suicases weigh around 20 kilos which is really not that heavy.
We were disappointed with the bus station, daggy and ugly in our opinion but we sat and waited to check in and found that we were two of only nine passengers aboard the huge bus. We had bought the tickets online some time ago at 16 eros each which is about $20 and thought that was a good deal for an 8 hour trip from Lisbon to Serville.
A reason was that we would see the country side, but travelling on highways you don't see too much, and we sat up front for a bird's eye view of the road. It was a comfortable journey until about 50 kms before the Spanish border, the driver stopped the bus and advised he felt there was a problem with the wheel- there was- the steel rim was close to breaking up!
We were all happy to wait for the maintenance truck to mend us evn though it meant arriving in Seville after 11pm.
We contacted our host Oskar and told him the story but he was going to a party and that late hour is party time in Spain and he would wait for us. He directed our taxi to his place, tucked away in a tiny lane in El Macarena; we have a spacious room with everything to ourselves and he lives upstairs with his dog if we need anything; another good airbnb place to stay. Our address translates to 3 Love's Passage- very romantic!!
We decided to move the bed downstairs as the loft did not allow standing room and the stairs were a bit steep after a few glasses of wine; having rearranged the place to our liking we were content.
Did we want to go out to eat? Now it was 1am but we calmly answered we had just eaten and would stay in! Seems such a boring Anglo thing when the Spaniards are just getting into it as we witnessed on our taxi ride through Almeda de Hercules .... the night was young and the bars and restaurants were bopping. Oscar departed to his party and we unpacked, watched some Spanish soccer and hit the sack around 2am!!
