Weather: As usual, cold morning warm day!

Up bright and early, down under to our Metro station and with 2 connections we made the Atocha station in plenty of time for our rapid train to Toledo.

Firstly a quick comment on the efficiency of the underground- cheap, clean, safe and speedy; if you are not walking this is the way to go. And Madrid has some fabulous fast train journeys to other cities in Spain and this was fast, just 30 minutes and we were there.

Toledo is a masterpiece and was once the capital of Spain; it is the model of cultural and religious tolerance, where many diverse cultures lived in harmony. Muslim, Christian and Jewish traditions are commemorated in this wonderful city. It is an art lovers paradise and we fell in love with El Greco, who lived here, and gained a greater appreciation of his wonderful portraits.

With sturdy Asics on the feet we trod the cobbled streets for 7 hours and marvelled at the beauty of the architecture, the tiny streets and beautiful plazas.

We bought marzipan, a specialty and dined on local delicacies and left very weary.

Let the photos tell the story!

And when we got back to Madrid, our night guides collected us and steered us to a restaurant for some typical Spanish food- callos/tripe, pimientos del Padron, tiny cuttlefish/chopito, tapas and beer!

Alfonso and Alberto, our friends and "night guides" have been great and we have gained a good insight into eating and drinking the Spanish way; they are very hospitable, with a good sense of humour and very easy to get to know- we feel we have known them forever!

This has been a great day!
