BRISBANE FLOODS

We had been out of news range for a few days and were horrified to hear of the impending flooding of the Brisbane River and our home town of Brisbane.

We telephoned people and everyone was prepared for the worst.

We drove the 370 kms to Bunbury mesmerised by the radio news station and all the traumatic drama unfolding in QLD.

We talked about Australia- "land of droughts and flooding plains" and that everyone had believed that the Wivenhoe Dam would protect Brisabane from serious flooding.

We found an unpowered site at the Bunbury Glade Caravan park and stayed glued to the TV news for the evening!

Strangely the local news reported a serious bush fire north of Bunbury and south of Perth that had required the people nearby to be evacuated.

When you are so far away in a state that still suffers severe drought it is difficult to comprehend the flooding of a large modern city on the other side of the continent.

On Wednesday morning on the Bunbury/Perth Highway we passed the Lake Clifton turnoff where the deliberately lit bushfire had traumatised so many people and destroyed about 12 houses. You could smell that sour odour that seems to linger after big fires and police were still at the turnoff, directing traffic.

Our destination was Perth to meet up with Kath's sister Maggie and her partner Greg at cousin Sally's house in Inglewood.
