SHELL HARBOUR via Sydney, Stanwell Park, Wollongong, Port Kembla

Killaela camp ground, $20pn

Mileage: 7252

Hot, sunny 30+

Left Norah Head around 9am and set the GPS Tom-Tom for Shell Harbour via Waterfall. It was very strange to be driving through Sydney again after so many years; we left in 1994! It was an easy run but for the first time this trip, we had to turn on the A/c as it was getting very hot! The radio told us of high fire danger and temperatures in NSW and Vic.

We parked at Stanwell Park by the beach for brunch and specifically to catch the "Grand Pacific Drive" along the coast to Wollongong. The drive into Stanwell was just beautiful, narrow, winding, and steep through rainforest country! Kathleen was fascinated by the story of Lawrence Hargrave who took the first ever human flight from Bald Hill at Stanwell Tops in early 1900s; we had never heard of him or the event! Today this is a top hang gliding spot!

The iconic Sea Cliff Bridge was quite spectacular and we walked it and drove it! The Grand Pacific Drive down to Wollongong is just beautiful; highly recommended!

Killaela State Park at Shell Harbour, our camp site for the night was reached late and a bit disappointing; we had read it as beach side but not!! It took 5 tries to get a flat site and not to be deterred we made dinner and admired the hills views.
