Friday 11th May

We were up very early this morning (about 4am) to head to Luton airport for our flight to Belgrade. We flew with Wizz air which didn't give us a very good first impression as we had a terrible airline experience at a terrible airport incluing a huge wait to check our baggage in (despite already having our boarding passes printed) and then such a big line for security that we had to pay for the shorter line since the checkin had taken so long we wouldn’t have made our flight if we waited in the normal line.  The flight took 2 hours and wasn’t too bad despite the small seats and slightly dodgy landing.  Once in Belgrade we took a taxi to the hostel with a nice taxi man – he drove us around town showing us the sights and then helped us with our luggage (after first driving us to the wrong hostel, he took us to the right one).  We then checked in and chilled in the hostel with the nice hostel lady which was more like a big apartment which was nice.  We then went for a wander to and around the old fortress including the outdoor military museum, eating icecream , looking through the cute markets and laying in the beautiful park.

We then went for a wander of the shops and had dinner at a cute Serbian place where I had yummy goulash of game meats– rabbit, boar and deer.  After dinner it was back to the apartment for an early bed.

Saturday 12th May

We had a nice small sleepin this morning but were up in time for waffle breakfast and out for our walking tour at 11 (in sunny 30deg heat).  On the 3 hour tour we learnt about history (their many, often recent wars, the bombing in 99, the crazy inflation in 93 etc), architecture, and customs.
After the tour we had lunch at ? restaurant  (actually called question mark restaurant… I didn’t just forget the name of the place!) where we had traditional Serbian honey Rijeka (strong homemade brandy), veal cooked under a 'Saca’ and a mince pork/rice/spinach dish called Sarma.  The mince dish was very nice as was the rest of it.  For desert we went and got icecream/slushi and went back to the fortress park where we bought some old money from 1993 when they introduced crazy amounts of money to attempt to fix the inflation problem such as a 500billion dollar note (if valid these days would be worth 5billion euros but back then was worth nothing).

We then went back to hostel to chill and rest where we watched a movie (that we bought on the ‘black market’ for 2euros, as well as some earings for a euro, during which the police came and the earing lady packed up in a flash and started running yelling ‘inspection inspection’).  While movie watching, blogging and chilling we ordered chinese for dinner which was interesting.  After dinner we got ready for the big white party (a big dance festival where everyone wheres white called ‘white sensation’ and the reason we were in Belgrade!).  During getting ready we realised pretty much every one else in the hostel was also going, including a big bunch of Slovenian and Italian guys so we shared some rakija with them and all headed out to the party together.  On the way through the town, we thought we were heading to the taxi rank however everyone stopped outside this big white stretch limo and after 30seconds we realised the limo was for them!  We were able to squeeze into the limo with them which was awesome as we drove around Belgrade for about 30mins in a limo drinking champagne and rakija – awesome random occurrence.  We arrived at the white party and all got some wiked kanye west white glasses and entered the big stadium which was full of people in white.  The party went on throughout the night and had fireworks, fountains, people dancing from the roof, glowsticks and of course cool djs.  After much dancing, partying and loosing and finding the other people, we headed home.

Sunday 13th May

Today we had a long sleep in which was ok because we weren’t missing much due to the rainy cold 10deg weather.    After waking to toast for breaky we hung around the hostel for a while watching a movie and blogging.  We finally pulled ourselves together and headed out to the train station to get tickets for the next day, and then went to check out the biggest synagogue in Europe.
It was pretty cold and wet at this stage so we went and had lunch in the bohemian quarter at a gorgeous restaurant covered in flowers where inside there was a big party happening.  We had pork rolled and breaded and pork rolled with capsicum and cheese inside (they call capsicum paprika which is confusing!).  After lunch we were still cold and wet so headed back to the hostel where we watched another movie, packed our stuff, chilled out and went to bed.
