Backtracking to Petersfield where my days were filled with good company~breathtaking scenery and a wonderful home.

Petersfield was an well rounded experience-from going out on the town with Melissa and Gabe (The whites daughter and boyfriend) when all of a sudden the roads were flooded and the sky was being hit with a shocking amount of thunder and lightning, more or less like being in a wet t-shirt contest!- to catching up on my tan I lost in London, hitting their poolside with ease- cooked a homemade Canadian\Greek meal for the whites-experienced stone Henge, Winchester Cathedral- then out for dinner with the whites and another gang from White rock, Canada, to an Itailian Stalians homey restaurant in the village- finally a fantastic trip to the horse races, where we had a picnic and tried to earn some cash, I managed to win 140 pounds!... no~actually Melissa did, I won about 20,- Bless Elaines heart, she drove me to the gatwick airport at 3:45am where I would set out solo a la Faro, Portugal! The whites were way too good to me!

Exsausted, conscious for 48 hours, I stumbled around Faro trying to find my hostel, parked my big bags and was off to keep myself awake somehow. A large coffee was my cure and I enjoyed it right on the marina with a beautiful view reading my lonely planet, when a couple befriended me. Tash from London, Steve from an Aussie living in London, we ended up spending the day together and early the next morning we were off to rent a car and drive the south coast across to Segres.

We didnŽt make it out of the parking lot before, crash....! we managed to scratch up against the car next to us, as Tash is used to drive on the right side of the road. Both cars were fine, we were all a little weary but our consensus was to keep going and with all our three brains we could accomplish he task. Tash-driver -Kate-keeping Tash on the right side of the road- Steve-the directions man! So with our Hybrid mentality we headed of enjoying the Algarve- which is open grape and olive countryside with dramatic cliffs down to the warm sandy beaches.
First stop.. a beach.... So we found one in Albeferia and stayed there till the 6pm, then off to find a room in the inn. Found a great place in segres with our own queeen beds and bathrooms, kitchen and tvs- next we had some traditional Portuguese food...(great fish!) After a few bottles of wine later we stumbled down the street only to find a great pub with people flowing onto the streets, naturally we stayed till the wee hours dancing.
The next day consisted of pure vacation slack. We flopped ourselves under the plyapas and chilled out, and when I had my rest I ran the beach of few times to get my blood moving properly. Another night where we stayed at the same place, with a little bit more trouble, we think she thought she could scam us out of a few bucks.... we resolved that! Next morning we were on the road again.... next stop the town of Silves to see the old castle with a 360 view of the town below. The back to the busy streets of Faro-dropped the car off and I took the next bus to Lisbon, steve and Tash were to go to Seville.

Met a random Portuguese guy on the bus, Nuno... a typical artist type reminding me every 30 minutes that he was a complicated soul! after he gave me a pouch to wear around my neck, with no string and a hole in the bottom we were off the bus and again offers me a ride with him and his friend.. interesting, did he really think I would put myself in that position, well probably harmless, but not taking him up on the red flagged idea. With my heavy backpack I started my journey to find a hostel\residential.. managed to find one up a steep hill that turns out to be in a great area. Fell asleep ASAP, and the next day i would find my bearings on the city. Hot, dusty beautiful architecture surroundings me, with my ears craving english. I happend upon a design conference brochure... so fantastic. So off to the www.experimentadesign.com show, and they next day to see the design museum as well as two lectures... one Portuguese man and Phillippe Starck ( a famous industrial designer!) Philippe was actually not what I expected, but was surprisingly refreshed by his open mind, relaxed views on life and green ideas. Any ways, hard to describe, but I was very happy to listen!

So Portugal has been good to me, besides the men who whistle at you and the language barrier- but IŽll get used to it! Off to Sintro today to see a palace, then maybe go up the coast to Porto, then Bilboa in Spain.. then Barcelona... who knows.
Hope everyone is well back in Vancouver....

lots of love...
Kate xoxo
