Imagine this: 140 or so screaming, shirtless boys basted with Crisco, watermelon juice dripping down their chests, flour on their hair chasing after greased watermelons, spitting cherry seeds and diving headfirst down a water slide, all within 500 square feet.

Camp is awesome.

After spending for years with 18-to-22 set discussing Beckett and beer pong, the coast of Maine is a much-needed change. In some ways, Chewonki is a lot like Bennington (my recent alma mater) in its idealism, sense of community and forward thinking. In other ways, Chewonki is the anti-Bennington; irony is passe here and anything but optimism is looked down upon. After a week here of being on duty non-stop (since pre-camp ended) I have begun to feel a bit claustrophobic. Sometimes I want to get in my car and just drive up and down Route One, looking at the coast and listening to my music. for the most part, though, I think it is important to learn to share one's space and let others in, to put your life on hold to live in the woods for two months and make the happiness of a few rowdy kids your ultimate priority.
