Where I stayed
I headed out for a daytrip to Bamberg today. I have heard before that it has the highest concentration of breweries in the world (if I am wrong please correct me). There are beer gardens everywhere! I decided to wait until 11 am before I taste my first beer.
The town of Bamberg is really beautiful. There are a few hills where there is a cathdral on top of each one. The one cathedral called the Dom was built in 1257 and hasn't been destroyed. The whole old town is a UNESCO world heritage site. It reminded me in some ways of Rotenburg OBT but I liked this better as it has a more "lived in" feel as there were locals everywhere.
I had my first beer and had an assorted sausage plate with it. Even the sauerkraut had pieces of bacon in it! I walked around more as I convinced myself that I will speed up the metabolism so I can drink more beer sooner without getting drunk! So after my quick walk I found another brewery called Klosterbrau. The beer was good but didn't stand out for me.
I met up with Petra another girl that I met through Couchsurfing. She took me around some more and gave me an excellent history lesson of Bamberg. She took me to a local brewery that makes this beer called Rauch Bier. It is smoked and the beer literally tastes like bacon!! We than went to a brewery/beer garden called Spezial Keller at the top of one hill that gave amazing views of the town and the surrounding area. The beer was really good here. We than went to her apartment and hung out there. She let me try some of her beer that she had which is another locally brewed beer called Mahrs beer. They ferment this beer differently and they open a hole during the fermentation so it isn't as foamy as regular beer. I was happy that out of the 9 local breweries in Bamberg, I tried 5!
Walking back to the train station the bars were packed! May 1st is a big holiday here and everyone is partying it up tonight!
