Ok, so this was supposed to be a food/travel blog, but so far the food's not been great but the travel has been interesting, so I'll focus on that for now.

Arriving in Rio de Janeiro was a bit of a culture shock.  Off the plane at 6am and into rush hour traffic on a bus and past the many favellas was an interesting introduction and I was pleased to make it to my hostel in one piece!  I spent the first day getting my bearings and went to the ugliest cathedral I have ever seen, - so bad it would make the Sheffield 'egg boxes' (if they hadn't been torn down for being so ugly) seem sophisticated.  Catedral de So Sabastiao is a cross between a walnut whip and a darlek.

Over the next couple of days I did the usual tourist bits, the highlight of which was Christ the Redeemer.  Although half way up the hill he was shrouded in mist, when I finally got to the top, Christ was quite a vision.  I'll let the pictures do the talking!

The other highlight was a football match between Fluminense (one of four Rio teams) and Corinthians (Su Paulo).  WOW - what a noise!  The stadium was only half full but the noise was teriffic with drums, flags, flares, singing and of course the passionate fans who used an array of swear words, only some of which were translated for me.  Fortunately, Fluminense won (1-0) and everyone left the stadium in high spirits which made for a fun but squashed and noisey train ride back!

Oh, and the food - the over-riding flavours so far are salt and sugar, the underwhelming fried fish which tasted like Kentucky Fried Fish has probably been the lowlight ... lets hope for something more interesting on Ilha Grande, my next stop.
