It took us 9 hours to get here to Jackson (and I am not sure if it is the Jackson of the song) but I am getting the hang of driving on the wrong side of the road. This is hopefully the longest drive we have to do - we have hired a Prius so it will save us some money on 'gas' but it is really quite cheap. We drove 550 miles (880 km) and it cost us less than $50! The worst part was a major interstate road through the Wyoming basin which was so windy we could barely keep the car on the road. You can see the flags at a potty stop are straight! The flag with the bison is the Wyoming State flag. Also at one stage the only radio station we could get was the Country Top 40 and that was intermittent. To counteract the effects of the GFC there is a lot of road work being undertaken to keep people in work so we were held up a number of times as well.
Can(umleit)on City, a place on the way, has 35 prisons and there is a sign saying "Don't pick up hitch-hikers" - unfortunately we were yakking too much and missed it which is a shame cos I love taking pictures of interesting and different signs. There were a couple of signs with Adult and the route/s to take - it is a major truck highway...
Very few signs give the distances to towns but they do have the route number and what direction (N, S, E, W) which is actually much better than the way we do it because it is a problem if the place you want to get to is not listed.
The middle of the US is basically desert and although it gets very cold there is very little precipitation (similar to the Australian outback) unless it is mountainous. It looks like a moon scape for the most part but we are now in a national forest so back to green and mountains.
We are staying in a motel room that is very small - it is a good thing we get on OK! At least we have a bed each.

Keep me updated.. Vital lift in dreary work day world. 15 hour day yesterday (Katanning and back) and I'm a trifle shattered. And I have just got an e-mail that has engendered a "what are they thinking...." response.... How do you manage to do it so often???? NAG

I want to know - is it hotter than a pepper sprout? And can you eat a pepper sprout and tell me how hot it is! For Johnny Cash fans everywhere!

Have been following your posts with interest and envy. Deeply concerned, howeve,r that you've missed the point of being in the US by hiring a Prius rather than a v8!

Keep on truckin'
