We decided to go to Monterey for breakfast.

Monterey is, apparently, a very nice place for very wealthy visitors from San Francisco, to holiday.

To me, it's the place that nearly destroyed my reputation as brilliant map-reader and an awesome navigator.

We've been using the Rough Guide to California as our map book and so far, it has served us well.  So when we first looked at Monterey in the book - there didn't seem to be a problem.

Coming into Monterey was straight forward enough, however, instead of being greeted with many golf courses, old Spanish decor and expensive villas, we faced a poor man's Sim's city version of 'light commercial' - multiple car yards, mini-warehouses and super-size shops.  Light industrial & commercial on very flat ground - one boring scenario and not a single coffee shop in sight.

We followed the map and either it was wrong or the street was wrong or I was wrong (never!) because we ended up back at the freeway.  We managed to dodged the entrance and somehow drove into the back of a shopping mall, where a truck said hello, forcefully.

Completely over, attempting to find the main coffee stripe of Monterey, we drove to the beach on the other side of the freeway where we found sand dunes.

After many more sand dunes then the Westin hotel followed by a car park and the end of the road.
We pulled up beside a group of joggers to discuss our options.
Which amounted to - return to freeway and find somewhere else to eat.
Which we did.

Flat, boring and completely unappealing -poor Monterey!
