We finally arrived in Kerala two days ago after our long and drawn out journey down from Hampi via Bangalore. We're staying a pleasant clean little hotel which looks out over the Lakshadweep sea. The monsoon is in full swing down in Kerala at the moment and we're getting about four or five hours of quite impressive rain and thunderstorms in stark contrast to the cloudless sunny blue skies we've become accustomed to! We've been quite lucky in many ways as we'd be told by people along the way that we'd get quite a lot of rain when were in Goa and got away without so much as a drop of rain while we were there.
As its the monsoon season Varkala's about 80% closed at the moment and feeling a little deserted. Its not been too big a problem as there are still places to eat and drink and we've got the impression that to come here when its 'in season' would probably have been a bit busy for us. Most of the restaurants, shops and accommodation are perched up on a sheer cliff-face over looking the beach and there's not a great deal of street lighting here (as with most places we've been in India so far) so making our way home after having dinner can be a bit nerve racking.
At the moment we're starting to turn our thoughts to Malaysia as we're flying out there in two days, and looking forwards to the next leg of our journey. We may write again just before we get on the plane, failing that we'll post another blog when we get to Kuala Lumpur. Hoping that everyone is well and happy at home.
Take care
