Have you ever had a moment where your body was ´well done´ (from too much sun), you wished you were four years old (and could have a tantrum) and now understood self-injurious behaviour?
We´ve been sitting in the office of our haunted house hostel for the last hour and a half. The heat is sticky and the grime is thick. I can´t get the feeling of pounds of dirt under my nails to go away no matter how many times I wash my hands. The horns keep blaring even when there is complete silence. And the dog won´t stop licking my feet.
Central Lima was an onslaught of smells, sounds, sights. It made us want to just turn off one or more of our senses in hopes of a moment of peace. The distraught looks on our faces clearly screamed Sensory Overload!!! A constant state of - too much.
The amount of vehicles, commercialism and ´modern conveniences´ surprised us and has us sitting here in our desperate attempt to catch the next bus OUT. It´s coming up on two hours of waiting now and we are slowly wilting, more and more, into the hardwood floor. I´m considering picking up one of the books above my head and beginning to read - if only it weren´t in German. Though I probably could have learned some German in the time I´ve been sitting here.
(We are having a good time though! Just having a ´moment´. This is an attempt at creating humour in the face of possible impatience and exhaustion.)
The male attention we´ve been privy to this afternoon was predictable though left us feeling a tad bit harassed. I was approached by a police officer in a park who warned us that his people could be "dangerous" and I was to be careful but enjoy his country. I´m not too worried about it.
Our plan (if we ever get to talk to the office people) is to book a bus to Paracas tomorrow morning and see the Islas Balletas - what they call the Poor Man´s Galapagos - and then on Monday we hope to take a flight to Cuzco where we´ll see Macchu Picchu and, hopefully, get some jungle time.
The heat and constant noise is making us tired but we´re hopeful that we´ll spend the evening numbing our senses at the local pub. Haha.
