When traveling on your own in Australia, it's really quite impossible to go anywhere without a tour company. You could rent a car but that is expensive and being that I'm not familiar with driving on the left side, possibly dangerous. Gas prices here are also insane (the news last night said that in 6 months it will be over $2/litre!) and it's apparently impossible to find gas stations. So I opted for a tour of the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians this week.

It rained and the clouds would tease us with the thought that they would disappear as they moved quickly through the sky, always bringing more with them and never actually clearing enough to see the sun as it set behind the 12 Apostles. With the wind, it was as cold as a Canadian winter and we stood shivering against the fence, trying to take pictures that weren't turning out for all the clouds and grey.

But the rainbows! I have never seen a rainbow from beginning to end; there has been buildings in the way or clouds or it's just never shown that much of itself. On this trip I saw not only one rainbow in a perfect arch but a second, lighter one, above it as well! And there were two of them like that and a bunch of smaller ones over the water while watching the surfers or the waves. It made the disgusting weather completely worth it.

The Grampians tour, however, was a complete waste. I should have known better. I grew up camping in the Rockies, how much better can a "mountain range" get? Especially one that you need to drive 4 hours to get to and 4 hours to get back from. We had less than 3 hours on the actual mountain. Boo. Hiss. I was still glad I went because of the "free-range" (haha) kangaroos that let me get just close enough to take pictures but not too close before telling me to Back Off!

The pics are in chronological order with some random Melbourne ones thrown in. Monday and Tuesday was my Great Ocean Road trip and Wednesday was the Grampians. Enjoy! I'm off to Cairns in Saturday for some spectacular diving care of some Hodgson-Pageau sponsorship (many, many thanks!!) and will be there for three days before heading down to Sydney and onto New Zealand.

in the land of the I don't knows
hey nice pictures. When you get to Sydney check and see if they still have the buses that run throughout the city, taking you from one tourist attraction to another. You can get on and off where you want and it is reasonably priced (in 1986 prices anyway). It was a great way to see the city! You are so cute in braids. Going to see Rent tonight and will be thinking of you and NYC. I miss you...
