Today was my birthday and it was fantastic. The day got off to a great start when Jayne and Holly surprised me with a breakfast at our hotel. It was relaxing even though the coffee was weak! We spent the day wandering around in the car stopping for photos. We got some great shots of the wildflowers and mountains. It was another gorgeous day with blue skies and warm temperatures. We drove to Gothic on a dirt road and made many stops along the way. We were passed a lot! I don't know what the rush is for when the scenery is spectacular!  We wanted to have a picnic lunch at the Avery campground but the biting flies were out in full force to we came back to the hotel for lunch and a siesta.
We had gotten a tip from a couple of locals to drive out Slate Road so we did that in the afternoon. It is a dirt road that runs alongside the Slate River. We started off going slowly down the road at our usual pace, stopping for photos. A few minutes into our drive we were stopped....pulled over again by the local Crested Butte police! Now what did we do?  Well, this officer was as nice as he could be. Seems he was concerned that we looked lost and he wanted to see if we needed any help. That sure was a different experience from Kansas!
Tomorrow we head to Ouray Colorado. It's a 3 hour drive but we have all day to get there!
