Greetings!
We're in an internet cafe on Hollywood Boulevard, just across from the Chinese Theatre and close by to lots of mega-rich superstar celebrities, except we haven't seen any yet. We're beginning to think it's all a conspiracy and they dont really exist!
We've spent the last couple of weeks driving from San Francisco to LA, right along the California coast. The first big stop after SF was Santa Cruz where we spent a night. We checked out the Boardwalk which is a big amusement park right beside the beach, and also got to go to a midnight showing of The Goonies which was brilliant as we had seen all of the locations in Astoria! Chunk even turned up at the start to give out prizes to the mega-Goonies fans (of which there were a few - very strange people!) The next day we continued along the coast and saw more than a few surfers along the way. Santa Cruz is where the guy who invented the first wet suit and set up O Neills is from, so there are a LOT of sufers there.
From Santa Cruz we headed to Monterey and Carmel. Both are nice towns, but the main attraction is the 17-mile drive which basically goes out along the coast and is owned by the Pebble Beach company. Not surprisingly the Pebble Beach golf course is there, along with about 10 other golf courses and some huge mansions. We checked and the cheapest we could find was a little shack for about 4 million dollars! We stopped off in Carmel for a look around and we THINK we saw the ex-mayor of Carmel, Clint Eastwood getting petrol... although he probably employs people to do that for him!
After Carmel we hit the Big Sur coastline which was amazing. The sea is unbelievably blue and there are gorgeous views around every corner. We have tons of photos of it on the Big Sur blog entry. We also went to see the Hearst Castle near Big Sur. For those who've never heard of it, it was built by a big newspaper publisher who filled it with really expensive antiques. There's even a statue there that he bought which came from the pyramids in Egypt, highly illegal to do something like that now! But it was pretty impressive, particularly the swimming pool which unfortunately we werent allowed to dip into.
We headed on then to Santa Barbara for a couple of days to hang around with the rich and famous! Well, not really but we did to the four seasons for a cocktail. We also did a day trip to one of the channel islands which are just off the coast. They no longer have anyone living there so there are lots of trails and wildlife but we only had a coupleof hours so just did a short hike up a cliff! We did see a whale pretty close to our boat which was cool.
Santa Monica was next on the agenda for a couple of days where we got to check out the madness that is Venice Beach! Lots of street performers, stalls and stuff we'd love to buy if we had any room in our bags!
We've been in LA since Monday and have been trying our hardest to find celebs to no avail! We've done the tour of the movie stars homes, checked out Sunset Boulevard and the Walk of Fame...no famous people! Karen thought she spotted Patrick Dempsey (aka McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy) in a restaurant the other day but it wasnt him. Ah well! Spent yesterday queuing for things in Disneyland...the happiest place on earth (if you like standing in line!). We're staying in the motel where the karate kid was filmed for the next couple of nights, no sign of him yet though! Have to get going here as we are parked at a meter and about to get clamped! Bye for now!
