As soon as you arrive in washington you realize what an important place it is. The streets are clean ,all of the buildings have something to do with the federal government and there are cops everywhere! The area we were staying in was only a few blocks from embassy row, but it was also right beside an up and coming neighbourhood with lots of restaurants, bars and cafes and also a fair few crazy folk wandering the streets and shouting at anyone who would listen. We experienced the craziness first hand in the local laundromat when Rob eventually decided the socks needed a wash. The place was full of strange people, including one guy who wandered up to our dryer, stared in, opened the door and started taking stuff out. He wasn't trying to steal anything, just hadn't a clue where he'd put his own stuff! Another sign of the craziness was the notice on the washing machines warning customers not to put anyone inside the machine as they may be injured as a result of the high speed spinning! Hmmmm.
anyway, aside from the craziness we got to see lots of dc including the white house, Lincoln and washington memorials, and capitol hill where they let us in when we said we were irish! We also saw george dubya's chopper arriving back in the white house, we would have gone to say hi if it wasn't for the scary looking dogs and cops all over the place! We saw a couple of the museums there ... Which incidentally are all free to get into! And we took a trip to see the pentagon but didn't really get past the outside of the train station as there was a lot of security around it. Karen managed to convince herself that we were being followed all the way back into the city... It was just that kinda place!
Lastly can't finish without mentioning the cherry blossom...Washington people are obsessed with it! They even have a festival to celebrate the cherry trees in the city and have news reports on when they reache the peak of their blossom-ness.
After all that craziness next on the agenda is the windy city!!
