On the bus at 8am so a little later start for the day! A fairly big driving day as we head to Venice, as we can look forward to the next week in Italy. The rain sets in so it's good we are on the bus. We go through the Semmering Pass and then break for lunch at a road stop with the spectacular Austrian Alps in the background. The assistant in the restaurant asks me where I am from and then comments why do you want to come to Austria it's boring here! I guess maybe no one appreciates their own back yard.
As we cross the Italian border the rain clears and the temperature increases rapidly, here I think we will finally feel summer! We arrive at our hotel by boat, carrying our hand luggage as there has been a festival that day and the ferry which would normally take the bus is unable to do so. Our cases will arrive in Italian time....and it takes 3 hours in the end to see them. We are staying on the Lido island in a quaint (code for average) hotel, it does however have a great garden where we have dinner that night, nothing fancy but the pasta entree was sensational. The Lido island is about a ten minute boat ride from the action, and we take boats after dinner to San Marco square. Well I did not expect to be so blown away.....what an amazing place, so beautiful no words can describe my joy at being here...a place I have dreamt of visiting for so long.
We had tables in the square and were entertained by local musicians while we had a drink. What a great night, one we will never forget.
The next day we were up early to try and beat the crowds. First stop a glass making factory and showroom. Very interesting and lovely displays of art work glass and jewelry. I bought some lovely pieces, necklace, earrings etc. back on a water taxi and into Venice for our included gondola rides. We had 5 boats and one had two musicians playing piano accordion and singing. There were 5 of us in our gondola, Lyn and Lawrie as well as Dorothy from Canada. Not entirely all that comfy but a must do and on my bucket list. Gives a good idea of what the back canals are like and also illustrates the many empty buildings in Venice. It is so expensive to live here and the buildings need constant upkeep, the younger generation choose to live on the mainland. The ride was about 35 minutes and then we had free time for 3 hours. We made our way to the Rialto Bridge for great views of the Grand Canal. Got a bit lost on the way back, so stopped off for lunch, the pasta is fantastic! By this time I wanted to do some shopping so Kevin went up the bell tower for the views, and I managed to get the Venetian mask and other bits and pieces I wanted. The crowds were incredible, cruise ships passengers everywhere and by the meeting time we were ready to go back to the hotel for siesta. It was getting hot and we had both had enough of tourists!
Later in the day we took another taxi to an island called Burano, very quiet and peaceful village with bright colored houses and little lace shops. We had a wander then our dinner was delicious. Magnificent risotto, pasta with clams, calamari and prawns with tossed salad, all washed down with crockery jugs of white wine. Bellisamo!

Hi Beth and Kevin
We are thrilled that you are having exciting adventures. Great pictures of Kevin drinking real beers in Germany. Venice is quite special for visitors with so many things to see. The picture of you both in San Marco square brings back memories for us. Looks like Kevin has had a hair cut. Are you visiting the islands around Venice ? Glad that the weather is improving for you. We caught the vaporettos all over the place. It looks like the renovations on the bridge of sighs have been completed. We could not see it when we were there due to the reno.
Crows are going well but have a few injuries. Sitting 2nd. Chris Judd (Carlton) got 4 weeks for grabbing an opponents arm after a tackle and injuring it uneccesarily. West Coast this week but that should be easy. Simon is back from Thailand and can't wait to go back.
Look forward to your next installment
Regards
Jeff and Ann
