Today was the port of Dubrovnik Croatia.  This little country is only 17 years old, part of the old Yugoslavia.  We took a scenic bus tour today to get an overview of the area.  Our guide spoke very good English, and had lived all her life here.  She told us there was quite a bit of destruction during the war for independence that was fought less than 20 years ago, and we saw evidence of bombed buildings and gun emplacements.  But there was tremendous construction going on, houses and businesses going up everywhere.  The area we were at is dependent on tourism, and had 8000 visitors a day.  She said the taxes were quite high here, 50% or more, but health care and schooling until college was free.  The towns were cleaner and looked nicer than some of the towns in Greece we stopped at.  We also went to an old stone mill, where they were still grinding corn into flour.  It was interesting to the kids, and we enjoyed the trip.
