Day 269 - 270 - Buenos Aires - Montevideo

After visiting a few more of BA's attractions (Cafe Tortoni, the cathedral, a museum and a pink palace of some sort) we took tyhe early morning ferry across to Montevideo, Uruguay. The ferry is not however a cheap way to travel (no return fares for a quid deals etc) and given that we don't really know what we're going to uruguay for, we could be accused of country collecting. However first impressions suggest Montevideo to be a charming city and even the customs officials did something to make us feel very welcome. Either Uruguay is in desperate need of visitors or the lady made a mistake but upon entry we were granted permanent residency. We'll have to see if it's worth taking up.

Though expensive, the ferry at least offered a different mode of transport. Smaller but not dis-similar to cross-channel ferries, it had an over-priced cafe and a disappointing duty free shop. I though, was in the minority with my opinion of these establishments. Not only did the cafe do a roaring trade but I counted fourteen people video'ing themselves as they meandered around the shop's three stunted aisles. Home cinema truly has reached a new nadir.

throughout this year we've encountered numerous people with what appear to be the simplest of jobs. Montevideo has possibly taken this a step further with it's introduction of "Tourist Police". While tourist police are unquestionably a good idea in some places, we haven't seen another foreigner since we've been here and there is only so much protection they can provide us with when we're using the ATM's.

Again we've become a bit city jaded, craving something less urban but hopefully this won't restrict our enjoyment of what has thus far proved to be a manageable, amiable and attractive capital city.
