Day 137 - Cairns - Lake Tinaroo

With Roland (the car's new name - after the Grange Hill character - don't ask questions) fixed in the morning (less than $100 for repairs and a checkover) we were thankfully able to begin our trip. I say thankfully because in addition to Roland's personal problems, Cairns was getting us down a bit. While on the surface the town looks promising, on closer inspection, barring expensive day trips, there's next to nothig to do during the day. You consequently get stuck in a rut of going out every night until the early hours and feeling shit all day. It's a fair indication that it felt we were there for a lot longer than we actually were. So after shopping around for the remaining items of camping equipment that didn't come free with the car we finally started moving.

That in itself posed the first problem as the four of us (now sometimes referred to as the Corrs - the only group of people we could come up with who were three women and one bloke) hadn't discussed our route whatsoever. This dilemma was encouragingly democratically resolved and we set off for the rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands, 100km or so in land from Cairns. Our first mistake soon followed as we were tempted into following a sign stating, "Scenic Route to Lake Tinaroo", our destination. While I'm sure this would have been beautiful in most scenarios, in ours it wasn't. Roland was punished by over 30km of pot-holed dirt track designed solely for 4x4's and any views that might have existed evaporated into absolute darkness. Half-joking screams of 'Hello' and 'Help' echoed from the car whenever we saw other signs of human existence - not very frequent!

Despite all this, we successfully erected our tents in the dark in time to order takeaway pizza - we didn't want to throw ourselves completely into the camping lifestyle straight away!
