Day 132 - Port Douglas
The beach here is one of the best we've seen (long, wide and uncrowded) and my prior concerns of Australia not holding the same appeal as Asia are quickly evaporating. The enjoyment derives from different things (the architecture and history here are not inspiring) but it's a bit of a relief not to have any cultural 'must-sees' and instead just to relax.
Dougies Backpackers, where we're staying, doubles up as the busiest bar in Port Douglas as well as offering the accommodation. This helps laziness set in and again we spent the evening just drinking and chatting. While most the backpackers refrain from approaching other people, they are generally receptive and friendly when approached. Coupled with affable staff who actively encourage mixing, it's not difficult to see why there are so many long term occupants. Not us however, as tomorrow we head to Cairns to meet Rachael (another friend from home) and begin the hunt for the vehicle which will hopefully get us to Sydney in one piece.
