Where I stayed

This was my third trip to Pangkor. The first two times I stayed at Teluk Nipah. This time around, the destination was Pangkor Laut. A private island resort. 'One island, one resort' is their catchphrase. I've heard about this island before but finally got the chance to visit the place when I was invited for a two-week work holiday on the island. Very nice!

Being the only resort on the island, they strive for great service and many activities. So first up on the activity list was the guided jungle walk. There were two trails from the east to the west side of the island where the best beach was located, the Emerald Bay. The shorter trail was 0.5 km long and the longer one was 2.4 km. The guided tour was very informative, and the guide really knew her stuff. Imagine the 0.5 km walk took about 2 hours! Of course, you could always do these treks on your own. Very easy but the longer trek would require reasonable fitness. One thing for sure, when you arrive at the beach you would forget all the huffing and puffing because the beach was just gorgeous! Emerald Bay is by far the best beach on Pangkor.

Emerald Bay is the main beach here. There are no villas on this side of the island. There is one restaurant and a batik hut. There are plenty of beach chairs, wide sandy beach, emerald green water and the staff are always helpful. Shuttle van will take you here from the east side of the island. Most days, after brekkie I would make my way to the beach and at this time I would be the only person there. It could get a bit busy after lunch, but at that time I'd have already enjoyed two to three hours swimming, the sun and ready to go and do other stuff.

Animals and jungle are thriving on this island. The forest is very old with some huge trees. You will see hornbills flying around and they are not afraid of human and very photogenic! Cheeky monkeys are everywhere. There was one monkey that hung out at the restaurant and the pool almost every day when I was there, causing havoc and many picture opportunities. Fat and overfed monitor lizards usually can be spotted lying on top of stones around the sea villas. Sometimes they go hunting for crabs. During the day, you can see many fruit bats hanging upside down on trees. If you're excited to see geckos on the wall of your hostel room, wait until you get here!

Boredom is impossible. You can just stay around the villas and there are still plenty of things to do. I loved the infinity pool! Nice view overlooking the sea villas and coconut trees and at the background is the main Pangkor Island. Also there is an excursion to the nearby Pangkor Island to do. Since I have been there many times before, I did not do that.
There are five different restaurants on the island. Plenty of choice for food. If you feel guilty after eating too much, you can always go to the gym, play tennis or squash.

During the Christmas holiday and the new year holiday they have the beach party. It was one of the highlights of my stay. They had nice DJ, little dance area on the beach with disco lights and laser, and fireworks! Great start to 2010.

Overall it was a very very enjoyable experience.
