Barely in the country a month, and my parents decided on a long weekend trip to the Netherlands. We packed up our new Ford Taurus for what seemed to me an interminably long car trip. My memories of this trip center mainly on the castle turned hotel we stayed at and our Easter egg hunt around the grounds, but I'll expand them slightly from the pictures we took.

We explored the canal town of Giethoorn, It was so cool to me to see a town surrounded by water, where people took boats to visit their friends.

We also checked out the dikes on the North Sea. I had no concept at the time, of course, that a large chunk of the Netherlands was below sea level. Donna explained to me that the dikes were there to hold the water back, but being as the water was quite low and on a beach in front of us, not up against the dykes, I didn't really understand how they held the water back. Nonetheless, Paige and I quite enjoyed rolling down them as the pictures attest. Being outside and having a place to run around and move was wonderful after being cooped up in the car for so long.

Donna found it compulsory to photograph the great tulip fields of Holland and we visited the Keukenhof Gardens but flowers and gardens, like landscapes, are ultimately boring when you're six. Of course, when travelling, you can only aim to entertain your children some of the time. It would be a shame to visit Florence and not see any of the art work because you thought your children would find it boring. And I'm sure exposure to culture builds character or something like that.

Finally, we stayed at the Castle Wittem, in the tower room, no less. This made up for the gardens, and the fancy dinner was interesting (even if Paige fell asleep half way through) and the Easter egg hunt around the grounds full of fun exploring. To this day, I swear I left a red egg lying somewhere. Strange the things you remember.
