Egypt. A land that conjures images of deserts, pyramids,
treasure, and apparently camels. Most people on hearing that I was going to
Egypt seemed to take it for granted that I would be in the desert and seeing
pyramids, but they were most concerned that I be sure to ride a camel while I
was there. I'll see what I can do.

Egypt, like most other places in the world, is not easily accessed from
Fredericton, New Brunswick. This trip started with an overly inquisitive border
guard, a drive through a snow storm in northern Maine, and a call to AAA from a
ditch just off I-95. It took twice as long to get to Boston as it should have,
but my sister Paige and I managed to make it in time to grab lunch before our
trans-Atlantic flight with our parents, Donna and Lance. Paige and I enjoyed
our first alcohol at 30,000 ft on the flight to Frankfurt, a momentous occasion,
I assure you. From Frankfurt, we caught a beautiful flight across continental
Europe and the Mediterranean to Cairo. Coming in, we could see not only the
pyramids, but also the contrast of the desert with the green, lushness of the
Nile Valley. Gives you a much better understanding of why one of the world's
oldest civilizations blossomed here.

This trip was to be our family's second package tour (after Russia in '94) as
everything we had read said Egypt was most efficiently done on a tour and we
only had a week. After scouring the internet for various companies, we decided
on Imaginative Traveller's Nile Safari tour. Mohammad met us at the airport and
whizzed us through customs and into a waiting taxi. So nice when you're sleep
deprived. The tour was to start at the Hotel Santana with a meeting Sunday
night. We filled out a variety of forms and then crashed into bed in
preparation for an early start the next morning.
