After a great day of hot fishing action, attempted kayaking, and watching all forms of wildlife here on the Space Coast, Marc and I were up again before the sunrise, ready for another day’s adventure.

We are in a dry, hot, August, Florida pattern. Even the beach breezes don’t help much. If you are going to go out on the water for four hours, you better be prepared. Water, sunscreen, a shirt, wide brimmed hat are a must.

We loaded the boat and launched it at Front Street Park on the south side of US 192 and the west side of the Indian River. What a great boat launching site as well. It can handle four boats at a time, if people know what they’re doing. Parking the truck and trailer is convenient and set us up for an easy boat pick-up when we are done.

I hop on the boat operated by Captain Marc, and were are off on another adventure.

I really do like boating but I would prefer to kayak, canoe or sail. There is a special freedom of being able to use the power of nature and our own body to do exploring. But doing about 35 mph up and down the river is a great help in scouting out areas for manual powered exploration, later.

We went back to the fishing holes that we were successful with yesterday and we caught three nice trout. Not big enough to keep. Then the catfish started. What a disgusting fish. Like the cockroach of the river. They are like rubber with a huge mouth and spikes that stick out of their fins. The hooks get into that mouth and you can’t get it out. They twist and shake and dare you to touch them in the wrong place.

Enough , lets head south of 192 and check out the Indian River islands of South Brevard.

The little river islands are nothing short of spectacular. White sand, exotic birds, good fishing, great beaches with cool salty water. We were all alone to just enjoy nature. This is where to kayak. One lone sailboat had to sense to anchor here and just enjoy. This was very Keys like only we had it to ourselves. I went a little overboard with my photos but I couldn’t help it.

We got back to the Tuckaway Shores Resort and I prepared an outrageous late lunch of our tuna, shrimp, veggies, seaweed, sesame seeds, pineapple, and my special seasoning. I threw it in a pan on our patio and heated it up. We mixed it with some rice and beans and veggies. It was one of the best things I ever ate. Something about being really tired, burnt and hungry that makes a meal like this monumental. Marc was a great dishes and kitchen clean-up man. A nice touch.

Time for a summer nap.

As night time came along, I had to convince Marc to get up and explore and have a beachside, night time, adventure.

One of our favorite South Brevard restaurants is the New England Eatery and Pub. www.newenglandeatery.com 5670 S. Highway A1A. Now Marc is a 6’4” dude with a huge appetite. He eats healthy most of the time but when he want grease and ice cream, get out of his way and let the big dog eat. One must be strong when hanging out with the “I don’t care, I’m gonna munch what I want,” friends.

All of its fish and bivalves are fresh from New England or caught fresh locally. It is a swarm of older locals eating mostly the fried stuff. I stuck with the Steamers, they were small but tasty. Marc had the fried Buffalo Shrimp with ranch on the side. The owners daughter, (don’t know her real name) is so sweet as are the rest of the workers. But I like to goof with her and tried to get a natural smile picture. I believe I annoyed her but what else is new.

After a brew and light dinner we headed to Cocoa Beach to the famous Coconuts , on the ocean. There was a band playing and a big crowd of beach partiers. We hung out for a few hours and had a nice time.

Marc loaded up his boat and left this morning. I am back on my schedule. It was a nice visit, but I need to be solo. So here comes the serious calorie restrictions and increased cardio. I will check out some local bands tonight, alone.
