Standing in three of the wrong lines before I got my entry stamps for Indonesia I saw an airport full of surfing posters adertising perfect waves peeling down perfect points. I was in the right place. Stamped and ready to dodge the dodgy airport taxis I tried making a beeline out of the airport for the cheaper taxi fairs outside.
I skirted a couple and thought I was out of the airport danger zone and found myself in the airport taxi parking lot. Surrendering I jumped into the taxi whom I was able to get down to 100,000 Rupiah. Feeling a little less raped after realizing it was only about 10$US I struck up convo with the driver. A father of 2 at 23 after marrying his wife at the early age of 17. She was 14 when she was pregnant and he narrowly avoided going to jail by marrying her as soon as she turned 15. He found out I was 29 and told me I was too old to have kids now. "When you find a wife who doesn't have worms on the inside you will be at least 35 before you have children. When they are ten you will be 45, which is like a grandfather...don't just go for the pretty fruit, it may be delicious at the beginning but she may have (his fingers make insect biting movements)bugs that make you vommit. Just find a normal girl with 2 eyes, 2 hands, and 2 legs and be happy she is normal." He didn't get my amputee jokes, but he continued to school me on life, love, women, and children. I was going to get my money's worth out of this taxi driver.
I told him of the ladies I have loved, my regrets, my hopes for future romance, and then I was on the corner of some crowded street with the nightime humidity sucking sweat from my body as a horse drawn carriage waited patiently for me to pay the taxi and get my board and bag out of the street.
Levi's Tsanov's (That's the homie from Byron Bay, Australia) directions were good enough to get me to his room. A couple of high fives and a few catch up stories later we are back on track talking about the surf. Let me tell you people. I have been out of the surf for what seems like years. I can't wait to get back in it with a renewed purpose to surf until I break boards, bones, and hearts.
