Drove to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia this morning. Had a city tour (walking) with a local guide-a young girl who was very sweet. A lot of the city was destroyed in an earthquake so it's not as old as you would think-just made to look older. But still a nice city. Visited a church and the local markets. Then had some free time so checked out the shops. They are well known for a particular brand of crystal-so checked it out-but the only ones I remotely liked were €600!!! Don't think so. Think I will wait till Prague!

Then drove onto Zagreb. Leaving Slovenia the Slovenian customs checked everyone on the bus! At least got a stamp in my passport! Entering Croatia they also checked everyone-but didn't get a stamp on our passports. :(

Zagreb isn't that great on first impressions. Had a walking tour with a local guide-so it improved. But it is still a bit grotty. LOTS of graffiti and you don't feel safe walking around on your own-so you don't. Saw a famous Cathedral and also St Marks Church-it has a cool mosaic roof which you always see in photos of Zagreb. Checked out the upper and lower town and saw the old stone gate where there is a shrine to an icon of the Virgin Mary which miraculously survived a fire. There were lots of people praying at it. You kinda feel stink taking photos and intruding on people's prayer. So I tend not to. Same with in churches.

The old town (near the shrine) still has gas lamps that are lit every night and there is also an old medieval tower near the funicular where a canon is still fired every day at noon. Kinda cool.

The hotel is very nice.
