Where I stayed
On our way south to Dunedin, we decided to stop in Oamaru for a night because there are a couple of penguin colonies in the area. We were told by the hostel manager that we arrived just in time to see the penguins coming back onto the beach for the night, so we left to the first colony.
It was disappointing. We saw a couple of penguins, but since we had to stay in this viewing hide at the top of some cliffs overlooking the beach so as not to scare away the penguins, we couldn't see much. And photos were pretty much out of the question since they were so far away, but we tried anyway. After seeing a couple from a distance, we left for the second colony, but stopped at a lookout on the way. The second colony was even more disappointing, because it was a sort of wildlife reserve and you had to pay to go inside to see the penguins, which we didn't want to do. We gave it up for the night and went back to the hostel.
Oamaru didn't really have anything there; it was a sort of neat little town with plenty of old buildings (our hostel was an old hotel). We took advantage of the lack of activity to see the new G.I. Joe movie, but that was pretty much it for Oamaru.

Thanks, man. I'm really enjoying the trip, and I'm glad you enjoy the blog. I'm working on an entry now, actually. I just keep falling behind since I have to pay for Internet. :)
