....so I guess I didn't leave the island. Four noodle soups, a book exchange on the dock with departing Dave, and some laundry dropped off...is that getting too settled? The sand here must be quicksand.

Another jungle trek...this time to find a lagoon up a river. Did another local recommend this? Yes. Did we know where the river was? No. I feel like this must have been what it was like back in the country where they gave directions relative to 'that ridge over yonder' and 'in the second hollow you'll see the big oak tree where you take a right'. Some local tells us to walk around past the treehouse bungalows and look for the giant river emptying into the ocean. We were then supposed to 'walk up the river' literally, until we found a lagoon...a mere 45 minute walk upriver. Uhhhh, sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, our first attempt was not actually the river, but a stagnant pooling of water that was surely a malaria breeding ground. When we actually found the river, it was huge. And deep. Walk...the river...up it...for 45 min?? We thought, 'Nah, that's stupid, we'll hire this local family to take us in their boat." Except that there is no lagoon, just a bridge at which the boat stops. Luckily through an exciting game of Pictionary on the floor of the hut by our friend Roberto (you pick up new people here like you pick up ticks in the Tennessee woods), we learned that we were not to find a lagoon and taking the boat would be a waste of time. We turned back. All in all, we failed. However, we did not fail at experiencing the full wrath of equatorial sun. Despite copious amounts of sunscreen, our puny western skin withered under the intensity and now we are all whining like good babies.

I really really think I'm leaving tomorrow. I. have. to. go. Motivation. Would it be so horrible to stay on an island for weeks and weeks?? Is culture really so important? lol.

Holy malaria!!! I wish you would have gotten those shots! Oh well, what's done is done. It certainly looks like you are definitely getting the adventure you asked for, and pushing yourself to the limits over there. I think I would say
"screw the culture" and become a beach bum. At least for a while. Looking forward to your next post. Be careful!

I must admit, I am pretty entertained by this blog. Sounds like you are having a great time! Super jealous. Hopefully, I get to travel all around by the time I finish my program. :-) Looking forward to your next entry!

Sounds like you are having a good time right there for now. So enjoy it for a few days, and then you will be ready to move on, and see something new. I don't know if I would be ready for all the business of the cities, but you might just island hop around Asia. Sounds like the people on the islands are nice, and maybe not as scamming as the cities. Besides it has to be cooler near the ocean than in the cities. Enjoy, this is a vacation and you only have to please yourself. We enjoy just watching you have fun.
