Where I stayed
Caluwayan Beach Resort
Jasmin Beach Resort
Yesterday, while visiting San Juanico Bridge and Rafael's Farm, we spoke with the cabbie regarding other touristy things to do in the area. He suggested a cave. Since we were denied at Maasin, this seemed like a good idea.
The next day the cabbie picked us up at the condo. We again crossed the San Juanico bridge into Samar, then cruised aloing the shoreline. Twice, the cabbie ducked into sea-sde resorts, and let us out to walk around and check the places out.
Both had good qualities about them and warrant further investigation. Neither, however, seemed likely to occupy us for more than a day or so. Both were quiet, with not many guests in view when we were there. One charged a small entrance fee (60p), the other had a fee posted, but let it slide when it was apparent we were just checking it out.
Then we went in search of the caves. The cabbie didn't know exactly where he was going, and stopped frequently for directions. Finally, however, we ended up on an unpaved road that was especially difficult for passengers but couldn't have been good for the taxi. After several miles of road that was probably shelled and not repaired since WW2, the cabbie stopped again, and was told the road just goes downhill from there. We turned and went to the town of Basey, where we were directed to a tourism office.
We found that access to the caves were via a 90 minute outrigger trip down the river. It was too late (2 pm) to embark on one for the day. They provided a a breakdown on the cost for the trip (around 2500p, or about $55). We returned to the apartment where Zel made pancit for dinner. We made a video of her making it; I'll update this story with the link once it's edited and posted.
