Where I stayed
Magellan / Lapu Lapu Monument
Today was our last day in Cebu, an afternoon flight scheduled to take us back to Manila.
Near the airport is a monument on Mactan Island where the tribal chief Lapu Lapu killed Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan had already managed to establish Christianity on the island, converting the King of Cebu, but it would be more than 60 years before the Spanish returned in force to avenge the killing of the great explorer. The monument and surrounding park incorporated history and spectacular gardens, ringed by souvenir vendors.
Our flight back to Manila was uneventful. Upon checking in to the City Garden Hotel, the clerk mentioned we were being upgraded to a larger room on the penthouse level. Well, I don't know how much smaller the original room could have been -- this was one tiny room. Adding to the claustrophobic atmosphere was the fact there was no window! Well there was a small one, but it did not face outside. This was disconcerting, as the room was pitch black during the day with the lights out. When we woke up Sunday morning, it appeared to be 5 am when it was actually closer to 9 am.
