Where I stayed
After two busy days, I promised Zel we would play things by ear on Friday. The weather forecast a day earlier wasn't good enough to plan much in the way activities. We wound up spending the day listening to music, watching TV, and chatting with friends over the internet.
Zel still had a taste for pickled fish, so we went back to Gerry's Grill. The poor service we experienced the first time wasn't just bad luck, it seems to be a pervasive problem at this particular restaurant. In addition to the picked fish, we had pancit, a noodle dish served with liver and other innards (liver was good, innards, not so much). We also got grilled giant squid. Not the giant squid that eats whales for lunch, but nevertheless it is about 5 or 6 times the size of calamari typically found in the US. For dessert, we had toron, a warm pastry made from jackfruit (sweet, almost the texture of banana) wrapped in a pastry shell, fried, and served with a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Zel wanted this the other day, but was told it was 30-35 minutes. So this time we ordered it along with the entrees. And the crack service staff actually served it before some of the other items. The food was still good there, but not good enough to put up with that level of service. The place is fairly crowded though, so others don't seem to mind.
