January 13, 2008

Sherry & I flew back to Bangkok for one night to surprise her folks. They had no idea we'd be there to pick them up from the airport. They were expecting Erik & Somchai only. The guys friend Clemens also came out with us. They looks on their faces was absolutely priceless! Another look of surprise when we handed Steve a Heinekin and Marlene a Breezer Cooler right in the international airport. SURPRISE!!! Hugs and kisses all around.

Headed back to the hotel and got them all checked in, then we went for a bit of a walk around the hotel and stopped into a hotel for some noodles. Num num...we were all pretty tired after that as their plane was late arriving. Didn't take long to fall asleep and we were hoping to get a bit of an early start so we could check out some Wats the next day.

Marlene called right on queue at 08:00, so had breaky and got their bags stored away. We didn't even have any cause we were only overnighting. Decided to hop on the rapid transit and go down to Central Pier, then take the water taxi along the Chao Phraya River. Hopped off about 6 stops up river, then grabbed the little river ferry to cross to the other side.

Our first stop was Wat Arun (Ratcha Wararam) also known as Temple of the Dawn is 81m tall and it's absolutely spectacular. It's built in 1784 and the artistic intricacy is something else with all the small porcelain pieces. Lots of monks as there are several monestaries around the temple. Really enjoyed this temple, even the 2nd time around.

Next stop, after crossing the river on the little ferry was Wat Pho.Built in 17th century is one of the oldest temples in Bangkok. Wat Po is one of the largest reclining Buddha's and is gold plated. It is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, illustrates the passing of Buddha into Nirvana. The eyes and the feet are engraved with mother-of-pearl decorations. The feet is decorated with 108 auspicious charecteristics of Buddha.

Our time was running out as we had to catch our plane, so we decided to start heading back to the hotel. The water taxi broke down along the way, conveniently right outside the Department of Marine! Another boat came along and towed it to the pier and another ferry was there within minutes. So off we went. Ahhhh air conditioning in the Rapid Transit.

Out at the airport we discovered our flight was delayed by 2 hours, so seeing as we had business class tickets for this 55 minute flight, we had access to the Royal Thai Airways lounge. WOW!! Free everything and it's so incredibly tasteful.

Finally got on the plane and we in shock of what business class entails. We were in the bubble (upper portion) of the 747. The seats fully reclined so you could sleep if you wanted. There were waaay too many buttons to play with to sleep though. Towards the end of the flight I tried to catch 10 minutes of shut eye. Wow, if one could afford to fly this way all the time, certainly would. I can't even imagine what first class would be like. Looking forward to that on Singapore Air from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Another short one, but it will certainly be a treat.

Landed in Phuket and made our way to the hotel. When we arrived the staff were so excited to see us again. We were only gone 1 day, but you'd think we were gone a week - was very welcoming and kind and they made us feel super. Everybody was at the Komma bar next door awaiting our arrival. We were now a full contingent of 17 - woohoo!!! Had a couple beverages and hung out while others went out for a bite to eat. Good times indeed. We stayed there and visited with Grace, Chris and Rey, then time slipped away so we ended up just going to bed. It was a very full day and we were tired.
