From Ios, it was another ferry ride over to Mykonos. We were staying in Ornos, which was a short walk from the beach but a long way from the main town. Not realising the distance, we took a walk along the bay towards Mykonos Town. It was a bit of an effort but we made it and spent a bit of time exploring. Mykonos Town is a maze of narrow streets lined with small shops, and bars, that lead down to the water. A little like an old pirate port town.
The following day we caught the water taxi to Paradise Beach and spent the afternoon there amongst the nude sunbathers. After having my fill of surf and sand I took a short walk into the hills that turned into a long trek. I ended up the next beach over, this was Super Paradise Beach and here the nudity was even more hardcore. It was still a great beach.
Mkonos as an island has great beaches and plenty of bars (most of them on the beach), but as I had come through Santorini and Ios, Mykonos paled in comparison. Mykonos has been taken over by package tourists and expensive bars. Its fairly developed so its not as laid back as Ios, and lacks the beauty of Santorini. It seems quite artificial and a little full of itself. I guess it depends what you're looking for but I was glad to be only staying two days.
On the next, and last, day in Mykonos we spent more time on the beach, Ornos Beach near where we were staying. We were basically passing the time until our ferry left in the evening. I've never been good at lying around and doing nothing so after a few hours of this I took the bus into town with all my bags. I was going to meet back up with the girls in a few hours. I visited the waterfront and wandered the streets down to Paraportiani Church. This also gave me the opportunity to grab my last Euros in Greece. These were what back home we would call a souvlaki but with chips in it as well. During my time in Greece I had eaten more than I could count but still couldn't get enough.
It was time to leave when I caught back up with the girls. Conveniently, our ferry wasn't leaving from the town port and from asking locals we found out that it was too far to walk. Having a little extra time we started walking. This was a bad move. The only way to the other port was to walk along the main road. The road had no footpath and virtually no space between us and the speeding traffic. It was also dark by now and we had all our packs. It was a pretty frightening and exhausting experience ... and painful too as Em could attest. By the time we arrived at the port she showed us that she was bleeding where her pack had rubbed her skin raw. But we did get there, and caught the overnight ferry to The island of Samos, our last stop in Greece.
Overnight, wasn't the right word for the ferry, we arrived in Samos in the early hours of the morning. It would be about six hours before we were boarding our connecting ferry to Kusadasi on the East coast Turkey. The options to pass this time were to sleep at the port on an uncomfortable bench, or to sneak on to the unlocked and empty ferry and enjoy sleeping for a while on the couches. We opted for the second option.
