Over the last few days I made my way around Yala national park (the only way to get down here as it is forbidden to drive through sacred land). I did all my travelling via local bus to spice things up a bit, getting a good feel for local life and most importantly for me - to hear some local music! I ended up at a town called Matara for the night, a busy non touristic town that I didn't enjoy overly. The following morning I made my way to the ancient fort of Galle.

Galle was a European fort after it was a Sinhalese settlement. The dutch arrived and built a basic fort here in 1588, following this the Portragese conquered the Dutch with a slave army and built what we see today. The Galle fort is one of the best preserved 14th century European forts in Asia and here's the best bit - I'm sleeping within it!

I'm really liking the atmosphere here and it's a real highlight of my trip. A place not to miss in ones Sri lankan travels!
