Kota Kinabalu, commonly known as "KK", is the capital of Sabah in East Malaysia. It got its name after the famous Mt Kinabalu. You will enjoy nature and food tripping in this small island.
What made this trip more exciting and memorable is that it was our first out of the country trip in 4 years. And, we scheduled it right in the middle of our birth month. Jim is turning 30 on Oct 11th and im turning 29 on Oct 24th.
We booked a promo flight thru Cebu Pacific, 3 months ahead. I researched on places to go, things to do, where to stay and all the basic essentials to make this trip worthwhile.
On our first 2 nights, we stayed at a good hotel in the city center - De Galleria Hotel. It was new and clean, although the rooms were not too spacious, but it served its purpose. You dont really plan to spend the whole day in the room, anyway. It has Wi-fi, and a really nice bathroom. Food is not very good and very limited in the hotel restaurant but there are restaurants and fast food all around the area, for just a few minutes walk. On our 2nd night we visited the Port View for a sumptous seafood platter. The place is really cool, with karaoke bars, souvenir shops, buffet, and of course - the port view. The malls are also not too far away. Since its not too hot, you can even just walk to and fro malls and shopping centers in the city. I wouldnt advise to take a cab, unless you're headed to a really distant place, coz its expensive. At that time, the meter starts at 10RM (=PHP15:RM1), so its really not worth riding a cab for a 10min distance. And, for long distance trips, haggle all you can.
We visited the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park where we saw elephants for the first time.
We headed north for Mt Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Springs. We stayed at the Mt Kinabalu Heritage Hotel and Resort - a very cozy place. We booked a chalet wth the best view of the Mt Kinabalu.
We had island hopping and enjoyed the waters at Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.
City tour included a visit to different attractions and sites: The Green Connection, Mustapha Tower, 1Borneo HyperMall, City Mosque and more...
Red Alerts for Tourists: public toilets are not very welcoming, so better be ready for that (even at Starbucks shop -- ewww). be extra watchful of your belongings since pickpockets and snatchers are on the loose. Generally, customer service is not at its finest in KK. Coming from a country known for hospitality, it was one of the disappointments i had in this place. But, i salute them for their nationalism and i believe thats their key to being progressive as a nation.
