No apologies for the title!  Today was always going to be a long days drive.  There were two options, the shorter way using the interstate or the long way along the coast road.  No prizes for guessing which route we took!  Tomtom set out the coast road route as 5 and a half hours, so we packed up and said goodbye to the wonderful house at Humphreys ledge and set off to Mount Desert Island.

The Maine border is pretty soon after North Conway, so we were very quickly in one of the New England states we had not been in.  Not much to report on the drive really, passed through some lovely looking towns particularly Camden which seems home to many million dollar homes!  Over various peninsulas with glimpses of gorgeous harbors and deep blue seas.  We passed many wild blueberry roadside stands, a Maine speciality, and finallly came to Ellsworth, just before the bridge to Mount Desert Island.  It very much has a last post feel about it on he mainland.  We stopped at the Hannafords there and grabbed milk, pizza and blueberry pie, oh and some Bar Harbor brewery blueberry beers for Phil and followed he directions to the house.

What can I say yet again but Wow! This place is amazing.  Great house, loads of space and the most wonderful views across the sound to the mountains of Acadia national park and the beautifully named Cranberry Islands. We are on what is called the quiet side of the island, across from the busier Bar Harbor, but the views are stunning.  There is a wonderful deck, half of which is off the master bedroom and is screened, so I can sit with a glass of wine (or coffee in the morning) and not be worried about being eaten alive by the mozzies which seem abundant I'm afraid.  The boys are pleased to have a rocky beach at the end of the garden and have already come back with some sand dollar shells, the first of many I think.  We have just been out on deck and as a result of it getting dark early here and being on an island away from big towns, there is an amazing display of stars although just 9.30 and the moon reflected on the water is stunning.

So, I think we will have a good week here.  Whether we can prise Phil off the deck is a question yet to be answered.  We will do our usual getting bearings and planning our week tomorrow and see where the week takes us.
