Now we’re on the road again and enjoying the “scenic” drive through Nebraska and Iowa until we make it to Burlington. We passed some flat cornfields then some hillier cornfields…and well that’s as exciting as it has been.
It was nice coming back to Michelle and Mike (and temporarily Serge’s) place for some rest and relaxation before the long road trip. The first day we went down to Boulder to have some lunch and watch the hippies with Michelle. Later that evening we went to see the comedian Jon Reed. Since he’s from Hickory, NC he brought back some memories of NC. Unfortunately, Julie couldn’t catch a lot of the redneck jokes, but I’m sure in due time she will
The next day we went off to Rocky Mountain National Park. Since one of the main roads was closed we went over to Fern Lake. It was nice and cool at about 11,000 ft, but we had to dodge some thunderstorms. It looked a bit like Washington state with evergreen forests, streams and waterfalls. We then drove up to some viewpoints in the park. I didn’t realize how the weather would change so drastically! It was about 50 degrees with gusting winds, so after getting out of the car in my shorts and t-shirt to get some decent shots I bolted back into the car. I guess that was a mini-prep for Montreal.
The next day we headed down to the Chicago Lakes area. As mentioned by Michelle and Mike it was a beautiful hike down to from Echo Lake to a reservoir passing streams and an Aspen forest on the way to the lower Chicago Lake. Considering rain was imminent and my hiking boots were losing the soles we decided to head back at that point. We hit a little rain on the way back, but all in all we were pretty lucky to not hit any bad storms while hiking. After the hike, I had to finally retire my hiking boots and enjoy some pizza in Idaho Springs. It was nice to have some good pizza finally even if it took 2 hours to get it after we arrived. It was sad to leave Michelle and Mike’s place for our boring drive to Omaha with Serge. But I’m sure Julie and I will be back sometime soon.
