Rothenburg is beautiful. It is completely enclosed by a wall which is accessible in a number of places. so early next morning we packed up, skipped breakfast and went back to the medieval town to climb the walls. From here you had a good view of the town.

The town of Rothenburg was nearly lost in WWII. Near the end of the war a number of high ranking germans and their troops based themselves in the town. The allies had just flattened Dresden and were gearing up to bomb Rothenburg. Story goes that one of the allies generals knew about Rothenburg because his mother had visited years before and there was a painting of the town handing in the family home. He knew the historical significance of the town,. At the eleventh hour he send word for the town to surrender. This was fine by the town inhabitants who did not want to be bombed but was not going to be agreed to by the German high command. Fortunately the German commander was not present in the town on this day and so the mayor went down to the valley, met to allies and handed over control of the town. Sure its treason, but it saved the city. At the end of the war the citizens of Rothenburg asked the international community for fund to rebuild the sections of wall that had been destroyed during the fighting. Those people who donated have their names along the wall of the city.

The town has some grand buildings and lovely views.

One of the food specialties of Rothenburg is Schneeballen.Ashley tried one, and it is thin crispy pastry folded layer upon layer to make a ball. Each of the layers had like a chocolate icing so it was quite sweet.....but a little weird.

After breakfast it was time to head off to see more obscure villages.
